The High-Altitude Packing List We Actually Use
Planning · 14 March 2026 · 5 min read
Three layers beat one thick jacket every time: a merino or thermal base, a fleece mid, and a windproof shell. Mountain weather changes four times a day and you need to add and remove, not commit.
Extremities lose the most heat. Two pairs of woollen socks, insulated gloves, a buff for dust and cold, and a beanie that covers the ears matter more than a heavier coat.
Sun at altitude is brutal even at minus five. SPF 50, lip balm with SPF, and proper UV sunglasses are not optional — snow blindness is real on the Spiti and Chadar routes.
Medicines: paracetamol, an antacid, ORS sachets, motion-sickness tablets, a broad antibiotic your doctor approves, and any prescription you take daily in double quantity.
Documents: original photo ID plus six photocopies, driving licence if you are riding, and printed permits. Keep a set in a separate bag from the originals.
Leave behind: umbrellas, hair dryers, jeans as your only trousers, and anything single-use plastic. We carry our waste out of every camp.
