Winter Spiti by 4x4: What Nobody Tells You

Winter Spiti is not a summer trip with snow added. The route is Shimla in and Shimla out, because Kunzum La and Rohtang are shut, and the whole valley runs on one thin lifeline road along the Sutlej and Spiti rivers.

Black ice is the real danger, not deep snow. It forms in the shaded stretches after Khab and near Malling nala, and it does not look like anything. Chains, low speeds and long gaps between vehicles are the only real answers.

Homestays run on bukharis — sheet-metal wood stoves. Rooms are warm from about seven in the evening until the fire dies, so a sleeping-bag liner and a hot water bottle matter more than an extra jacket.

Water freezes. Many homestays shut their taps and hand you a bucket instead. Plan for one proper shower every three days and be at peace with it.

Mobile network is patchy; only BSNL and Jio work in patches around Kaza. Tell family in advance that a silent day is normal, not an emergency.

The reward is a valley with no traffic, monasteries with no queues, and Langza at sunrise with nothing between you and the Chau Chau Kang Nilda peak.
