Ladakh by Bike or by SUV? An Honest Comparison

Expedition · 9 May 2026 · 6 min read

Riding Ladakh gives you the mountains on your skin. Driving it gives you the mountains at the end of a long conversation. Both are valid; they are just different trips.

On a bike you feel every pass, you stop wherever you want, and you will remember Gata Loops for the rest of your life. You will also ride seven hours in cold wind, deal with river crossings, and lose a day if a chain snaps.

In an SUV you cover more ground per day, carry proper luggage, keep grandparents and kids comfortable, and stay dry when the weather turns at Tanglang La.

Cost is closer than people expect. A bike trip with backup vehicle and mechanic runs around ₹36,999 for ten days, while a shared SUV batch is about ₹21,999 for six days — per day, they are similar.

Safety favours the SUV, especially in the first two days when altitude is still working on you. Riding at 5,300 m with a headache is how accidents happen.

Our advice: if it is your first time above 4,000 m, do the SUV trip. Come back for the bike trip once your body knows what altitude feels like.
